Aimhigher Kent and Medway Partnership Operations Meeting

Partners and Practitioners:

The Aimhigher Kent and Medway partnership is a collaboration between secondary schools, further education colleges and higher education institutions, plus other associated organisations (e.g. Lifelong Learning Network, Connexions).

Our partners in Kent and Medway include Canterbury Christ Church University, the Open University, the University for the Creative Arts, the University of Greenwich, the University of Kent, Canterbury College, Hadlow College, Mid Kent College, North West Kent College, South Kent College, Thanet College, West Kent College and 47 secondary schools in Kent and Medway.

Practitioners are the staff working in the above institutions. For instance, we have Learning Mentors in schools and Co-ordinators in further education colleges and universities. These staff work with students in various ways, including:

• Mentoring students one-to-one and in groups

• Facilitating visits to university campuses

• Facilitating summer schools in university

• Offering subject specific master classes and open days in college and university

• Offering information and advice about higher education for young people and their parents

• Training university students, who then work as ambassadors offering master classes and supporting university campus visits, summer schools etc

The Aimhigher National Parents and Carers Guide contains lots of useful information about supporting your son or daughter into higher education. There are also other useful guides available on this website.

Quotations from headteachers in an Aimhigher Kent and Medway Partnership Survey 2008/09:

"Aimhigher has proved to be both a motivational and inspirational tool in raising aspirations of target pupils."

"Aimhigher has raised awareness of higher / further education at this school and the opportunities available for students from backgrounds who would not traditionally consider such a route. Due to the enthusiasm and determination of our mentor, more students are being motivated to consider the further / higher education route".
