What Makes a Media Story?

All media stories need a ‘news hook’ – an attention grabbing element to catch a reader’s notice. Below are some pointers on how to identify suitable ‘news hooks’:

- Is the activity new/ one-of-a-kind/ unusual in some way?

- Are there any VIPs or important stakeholders attending who could be involved in media activity?

- Will it be a suitable event for a journalist to attend?

- Will it be a visually interesting event, with opportunities for photography?

- Is there budget for a professional photographer to attend?

- Will someone be available to accompany any media who would like to attend?

- Are there supporting statistics that could be used?

- Does the event tie-in to the wider news agenda, either at a national or local level?

- What benefits does the event have for attendees?

Types of events/activities that might be suitable ‘news hooks’ are:

– Conferences, particularly involving students

– Summer schools

– Aimhigher roadshows

– Associate/ambassador events

– Visually interesting activities involving students e.g. creative, scientific, unusual venues etc

– Work with specific target groups of students e.g. young care leavers

– Events/activities with celebrities or VIPs attending e.g. MPs, sports people
