University Bursaries
If you are a young person in or leaving care it is important to check if your university offers a Care Leaver Bursary. For example, the University of Greenwich offers a Care Leaver Bursary of £1,000 per year of study, plus help with graduation ceremony costs. The University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University for the Creative Arts also offer bursaries.
The Frank Buttle Trust
The Frank Buttle Trust helps by providing grants to students and trainees for further and higher education courses who otherwise would enter adult life without adequate qualifications or training for work. The Trust confines itself to helping with living costs such as rent, food, clothing, transport, books and materials needed for the course. Applications are considered from young people who are over 16 and under 21 and who are either:
• Estranged from their family
• Orphaned
• Adopted
• Cared for by relatives or friends
• Caring for a severely sick or disabled single parent
• Refugees with full refugee status or ‘Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK’
